Galeriegrab Neuhaus

--- CONTENT ---
The Galeriegrab Neuhaus is a megalithic tomb of the Neolithic Wartberg culture near Schloss Neuhaus, a district of Paderborn (North Rhine-Westphalia) that is only preserved in remains and not visible above ground.

Position
The tomb is located in Schloss Neuhaus on the parcel "An den Tallwiesen".

History of research
The tomb was discovered in 1844. In the same year, the first stones were removed and used to build the Tallhof. In 1918, more stones were used to build a war memorial. The remains of the plant were archaeologically examined in 1949 under the direction of W. R. Lange and in 1983 under the direction of Klaus Günther.

Conflicting locations temporarily led to the acceptance of two graves, although in fact only one exists. The installation described here was therefore listed in older literature as Galeriegrab Neuhaus II. Grab Neuhaus I shall be deleted.

Description

Architecture
The plant is southwest-north-east oriented. It has a total length of 27.5 m, a width of 2.6 m; the original height is unknown. Remains of a hill bed could be detected. The tomb has an inner length of 26 m and an inner width of 1.6 m. How deep the chamber had been sunk into the ground can no longer be reconstructed. The chamber was built from different types of rock. As a southwestern capstone, a findling was used, which is still preserved in remains. Furthermore, residues of a wall stone made of eggesand stone have been found which is still preserved up to a height between 0.3 m and 0.5 m and which is wedged with smaller specklings. Residues of the chamber plaster of limestone slabs have also been obtained. In the center, the chamber is divided by a transverse plate and a small threshold. Where the original access to the chamber was located is not entirely certain, but the most likely is the southeastern long side.

The building material for the chamber came from very different distances. Findlings occur in the immediate vicinity. The next limestone deposit, on the other hand, is only 5 km away and the next deposit of Eggesandstein is 16 km away. The material requirement is estimated to be about 160.1 t.

Funerals
During the excavations, only a single fragment of a tube bone was recovered, which is now lost.
