### Early Life and Education
George Mavros was born on 15 March 1909 in Kastellorizo, Greece. His father was John Black, a merchant, and his mother was Anna Konduzoglu. He studied law at the University of Athens (1926-1930) and later at the University of Berlin (1934-1935). In 1936, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Athens.
### Academic Career
Mavros taught private international law at the University of Athens from 1937 to 1942. During this time, he also served as a Deputy Head of Private International Law at the university. He graduated with a degree in law from the University of Athens in 1932 and became a lawyer.
### Entry into Politics
Mavros entered politics in 1945, following the end of World War II, at the urging of Themistocles Sopholis. He was assigned the Ministry of State by Sopholis. In 1946, he became Minister of Justice and temporarily served as Acting Minister of Education and Religious Affairs.
### Political Career
Mavros's political career spanned several decades. He was elected to Parliament for the Liberal Party in 1946. He held various cabinet positions, including:
* Minister of Economy (1949-1950) under Alexandros Diomidis
* Managing Minister of Coordination and Justice under Sophoklis Venizelos
* Minister of Finance (1951)
* Minister of Defense (1952) under Nikolaos Plastiras
### Honors and Recognition
In 1994, Mavros was honored by Yad Vashem as a Righteous Among the Nations.
### Personal Life
Mavros passed away on 6 May 1995 in Athens.
