Geri (Cyprus)

Geri, Cyprus

================

Geri (Greek: Γέρι, Turkish: Geri or Back) is a city and municipality located in the Nicosia District of Cyprus. It is situated approximately 10 kilometers southeast of the capital city, Nicosia.

Geography

The municipality borders several other municipalities, including Aglantzia to the north, Margos to the east, Pyroi to the southeast, Agios Somentos to the south, Dali to the southwest, and Latsia to the west. The area is part of the Nicosia Province in Cyprus.

History

After the Turkish invasion of 1974, a portion of the administrative area of Geri was not controlled by the Republic of Cyprus. This territory belongs de jure (by law) to the Republic of Cyprus, while de facto it belongs to the unrecognized State of Northern Cyprus (TDBK). A smaller area within the Dead Zone is also part of the municipality.

Name

There are two versions of the origin of the name Geri:

* The name Geri is derived from the Cypriot dialect word "agelin" or "agerin", which means a windy hill.
* In the past, pregnant women in the village would pray to Our Lady, and the name may be related to this tradition.

Demographics

According to the 2001 census, the population of Geri was 6,643. As of 2011, the population is not available, but it is likely that it has increased slightly due to natural growth and possibly migration.
