Gert Jan van Wijngaarden (* 1964) is a Dutch classical archaeologist and mycenaeologist.

Van Wijngaarden studied Mediterranean archaeology and cultural studies at the University of Amsterdam and received his doctorate in 1999 on Mycenaean ceramics and their cultural significance in the Levant, Cyprus and Italy.

Subsequently, he was director of the Nederlands Institute in Athena from 2001 to 2006. In early 2007, he was appointed as an extraordinary professor in Capaciteitsgroep Archeology at the University of Amsterdam.

Research focuses on the mutual relations between prehistoric and early-historical Greece and the Mediterranean. In this context, he conducts field research on the island of Zakynthos. He also deals with museum archaeology and cultural policy.
