**Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal**

The Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal (GWOTEM) is a military award of the United States Armed Forces. Created in 2003 by decree of then US President George W. Bush, it was first awarded to members of the armed forces for operations in various countries as part of the global war on terrorism.
**Establishment and Criteria**

The GWOTEM was established on March 12, 2003, by President George W. Bush. The medal is awarded to United States military officials who have participated in anti-terrorist operations. To be eligible for the award, service members must meet one of two criteria:
* Continuous military service for at least 30 days or
* At least 60 non-consecutive days of military service during anti-terrorist operations.
**Eligible Operations**

The GWOTEM is awarded for military service in various countries and regions, including:
* Azerbaijan
* Afghanistan (from October 24, 2001 to April 30, 2005)
* Algeria
* Bahrain
* Bulgaria
* Burkina Faso
* Greece
* Georgia
* Colombia
**Replacement for Iraq and Afghanistan**

Prior to May 2005, the GWOTEM was awarded to service members who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, from May 2005 onwards, the medal was replaced by the Iraq Campaign Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal for these specific services.
