"Government of Adamantiou Androutsopoulos 1973"
--- CONTENT ---
The Adamantiou Androutsopoulos government (November 1973 – July 1974) was the last government of the Military dictatorship in Greece, and was formed after the coup against George Papadopoulos by Brigadier General Dimitrios Ioannidis.
Dimitrios Ioannidis, expressing perhaps the largest portion of the country's Armed Forces, began to draw up plans to overthrow G. Papadopoulos from the summer of 1973. Although George Papadopoulos was also informed about the views of Ioannidis against the "liberalization" and "politicalization" he attempted and also about his moves and talks with other senior military, he failed to sideline him or "neutralize him". Thus, at the dawn of November 25, 1973, in a well organized operation, people of Ioannina arrested and confined his home in Lagonisi, the dictator and removed the entire cabinet from their positions, along with the Prime Minister. .
In an announcement released in the newspapers on 27 November 1973 a few simple explanations were given:
The new government was formed quickly and also roughly. Foreign observers commented that the majority of members were technocrats, while a reliable and experienced political figure was totally absent. Typical is the following opinion of the ambassador of Great Britain to Greece, Robin Hooper: “The new government gives the impression that it is a transitional government that was formed without expecting it – unexpectedly. (...) A minister told a French newspaper that he was dragged through his bathtub Sunday morning. He was under the impression that they would lock him up for the third time since 1967, but they led him to the defence ministry in a room full of generals and asked him to become minister despite the Prime Minister. Someone else was picked up by helicopter from Gythio where he is mayor. The new prime minister - a lawyer who once worked in Chicago and is therefore considered a CIA creation - had occupied various ministerial positions from 1967 until early this year. Androutsopoulos is very little known and does not inspire respect"
End of Androutsopoulos government - end of military dictatorship
After eight months of government, the events of Cyprus in July 1974 - events that were the main responsibility of them were the regime of Ioannis - dropped not only the Androutsopoulos government but also the military dictatorship itself.
The coup against the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, which took place on 15 July 1974 by a section of Greek and Cypriot armed forces, gave Turkey the pretext to invade the island on 20 July 1974 in order to guarantee the protection of Turkish Cypriots.
On 23 July, the Chief of Armed Forces, General Gregory Bonanos and the Chiefs of Arms, Lieutenant General
