Graham Townsend

Graham Townsend (June 16, 1942 – December 3, 1998) was a Canadian folk musician and multi-instrumentalist. He was active in the music scene from the 1950s to the 1990s.

Early Life and Education

Townsend was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He began playing violin at an early age and won the fiddle competition "30 and under" at the Canadian National Exhibition at the age of nine. His father, Fred Townsend, was a square dance caller for Don Messer and his Islanders, which led to Graham's close friendship with Messer.

Musical Influences and Career

Townsend's musical influences included Irish violinists Tom McQuestion and Billy Crawford, as well as Don Messer. He began touring and performing with Messer at an early age and later won the Canadian Open Old Time Fiddlers Contest in 1963. Townsend undertook numerous tours throughout Europe, Australia, and North America, including performances for Queen Elizabeth II.

Discography

Townsend recorded over forty albums and released more than two hundred of his own tracks. Some notable recordings include "Royal Princess Two Step", "Rocking Chair Jake", and "My Dungannon Sweetheart". He accompanied musicians such as Carroll Baker, Stompin' Tom Conners, and Dolly Parton on various instruments.

Awards and Recognition

Townsend was inducted into the North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame in 1982, the Ottawa Valley Country Music Hall of Fame in 1990, and the Canadian National Fiddling Hall of Fame in 1998. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Canadian Grandmasters Fiddling Championships in 1998.

Personal Life

Townsend was married to Eleanor Townsend from 1973 until her death in a fire on New Year's Eve in 1998. The couple had a long and successful musical partnership, performing together at numerous festivals and events throughout Canada, Australia, the United States, and Europe.
