Hamitköy (Turkish: Hamitköy) or Mandres (Greek: Μάνδρες) is a village located in the northern part of Nicosia, Cyprus. It is situated north of the city center and is under the de facto control of Northern Cyprus.

History

The area was initially an ovile until the arrival of the British, when it grew into a village in the early decades of the British period. In 1975, the Turkish Cypriots changed the name slightly to Hamitköy, meaning "Hamit village". The village became important in December 1963 when the Turkish Cypriots of Omorfita/Küçük Kaymaklı sought refuge and founded one of the largest refugee camps.

Geography

Hamitköy is located north of Nicosia on the new road to Famagosta. It is a suburb of the Turkish Cypriot municipality of Nicosia and has a total population of 5,338 inhabitants (as of 2011).

Name Origins

The name Hamid Mandres means "Hamid fold" in both Greek and Turkish. The name was changed to Hamitköy by the Turkish Cypriots in 1975.

According to the 2011 census, Hamitköy has a population of 5,338 inhabitants. It is an affluent suburb of North Nicosia and is under the jurisdiction of Northern Cyprus since 2008.
