International Union of Socialist Youth
The International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) is an association of socialist and social democratic youth organizations from more than 100 countries worldwide. It is a member organization of the Socialist International, considered its youth wing.
History
The IUSY was founded on August 24-26, 1907, in Stuttgart as the International Association of Socialist Youth Organizations, later known as Socialist Youth International (SIM). The founding conference was attended by 20 representatives from 13 countries. Karl Liebknecht served as its first president.
Initially, SIM had a significant presence with 170,000 members from youth organizations in 17 countries by 1912. However, during the First World War, many socialist youth organizations that were part of SIM diverged from the leadership line of the Socialist International, leading to a decline in membership and influence.
Structure
The IUSY is led by a President and a General Secretary. As of June 2021, Jesús Tapia (Juventud del Movimiento al Socialismo, Venezuela) serves as the President, while Bruno Gonçalves (Juventude Socialista, Portugal) holds the position of General Secretary. Victoria Hiepe from the German Jusos and Julius Jandl for the VSStÖ are two of the 18 vice presidents.
Member Organizations
The IUSY has member organizations in various countries, including:
* In Germany: Jusos (SPD), Socialist Youth of Germany – The Falcons
* In Austria: Socialist Youth of Austria (SJÖ), Association of Socialist Students in Austria (VSStÖ)
* In Switzerland: Young Socialists
* And many others from over 100 countries worldwide.
