Ioannis Tsangaridis

Ioannis Tsangaridis (1887–1939) was a Greek Cypriot general of the Hellenic Army.

Early Life and Education

Tsangaridis was born in 1887 in Lapithos, Cyprus, which was then under British rule. His father was Christofis Tsangaridis. In 1904, he went to Athens to study chemistry at the University of Athens, but he did not complete his studies.

Military Career

Tsangaridis participated in the Balkan Wars and World War I as a cavalry officer. He also took part in the Asia Minor campaign of the Greek army. After the war, he became a major general.

Exile and Death

In 1939, Tsangaridis was exiled by the dictatorial regime of General Ioannis Metaxas to the island of Ikaria, where he died on March 31, 1939.

* The Lapitos village states that Tsangaridis dropped out of school to go to Ottoman Macedonia, but his participation in the Struggle for Macedonia cannot be confirmed by either Greek or Bulgarian sources.
