Kolindros
================Kolindros (Κολινδρός) is a town located in northern Pieria and belongs to central Macedonia. It is part of the municipality Pydna-Kolindros, which was established after the 2011 local government reform.
Geography
The municipal unit of Kolindros has an area of 124.639 km2, with the community of Kolindros having a smaller area of 47.856 km2. The town is situated on the northeastern edge of the Pierian mountains, at an altitude of 250 to 350 meters. It overlooks Mount Olympus, Thermaikos Bay, and Aliakmon River.
History
Kolindros was probably built before the 14th century in the place of an ancient pole from the Alexandrine years. The town has a rich history, with some sources suggesting that Alexis Zorbas, a hero from Nikos Kazantzakis' work "Zorba the Greek", may have lived or come from Kolindros. His father was allegedly involved in trade with agricultural products.
Settlements
The homonymous Municipal Apartment of Kolindros has two settlements: Collindros (also known as Kolindros) and Palebela, with a combined population of 3,895 inhabitants.
Economy and Culture
Kolindros is famous for its cherries, which are an important part of the local economy. The town's location near major urban centers such as Thessaloniki (50 km), Katerini (40 km), and Veria (40 km) also contributes to its economic development.
