Location and Geography
Krideia (Greek: Κρίδεια) is a village located on the Karpas Peninsula in the north of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. It is situated in the Famagusta District, but de facto under the control of Northern Cyprus.
The village is nestled in the Karpas Peninsula, five kilometers southeast of Kantara Castle.
Population
According to the Statistical Service of Northern Cyprus, as of 2011, the village has a population of 172 inhabitants.
Origins of Name
The meaning of the name "Krideia" is unclear. However, Goodwin suggests that it may be a corruption of "agrideia", which means carob in Cypriot Greek. In 1959, Turkish Cypriots adopted the alternative name Kilitkaya (Turkish: Kilitkaya), meaning "main or more important rock".
History
During the period of Ottoman rule (1570/71-1878), censuses were conducted to collect taxes. In 1831, 16 Turkish family leaders were counted. In 1891, the British colonial authorities counted 136 inhabitants, all considered Turkish. In 1901, there were 154 Turks, and in 1931, 232 Turks were recorded.
Administrative Status
Krideia is located in the Mağusa District of the Republic of Cyprus, but de facto under the control of Northern Cyprus. The village is part of the İskele district in Northern Cyprus.
