Fotis Mitsis (1926 – 2019), was a Greek dentist, physician and university professor, Professor Emeritus of the School of Dentistry of Athens and former Dean of the University of Athens.
Biographical data
He was born in 1926 in Phoeniki Thesprotia and studied at the Dentistry School of Athens, from which he graduated in 1951. He was awarded doctor of the same School in 1962, while two years later (1964) he received the degree of the Athens School of Medicine. As a scholar of the National Institute of Health (NIH) of the United States of America, he conducted postdoctoral research in the fields of Endodontia and Periodontology, at the University of Pennsylvania Dentistry School (1964–1965).
He began his academic career in 1956 at the Kapodistrian University of Athens, first as an assistant (1956), from which he also evolved up to a professor at the Dental Pathology and Therapeutics Institute of Dentistry School. He was Dean (1975–1977) and President (1983–1987) of the Dentistry School, while for years (1974–1985) he was a member of the Senate of the University of Athens. In 1978 he was elected by the General Assembly of the Professors of the University of Athens in the position of Rector, where he served as Vice-Rector (1978–1979), Rector (1979–1980) and Pro-Rector (1980–1981). As Chairman of the Committee on Rectors (1979 – 1980), he worked on drawing up a draft law aimed at modernising and reforming Higher Education. He also served as President of the Nursing Department of the University of Athens during 1985 and 1986. In 1977 he was invited and taught as a visiting professor at the Tufts University of Boston (U.S.). Finally, he was a member (1981 – 1990) of the Advisory Committee of the European Communities (European Commission) for the modernisation of dental education and its harmonisation with the other Member States of the European Union.
In public life, he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hospital Evangelism in 1987–1988 and 1997–2001, Chairman of the Oral Health Committee, Chairman (1976–1979) of the Disciplinary Board of the Panhellenic Dentistry Association, while for several years he was a member of the Central Board of Health (KESY), member of the Board of Directors of the Board of Directors, member of the Health Education Committee and the National Committee against AIDS and a member of the Board of Directors at the Onassis Cardiosurgical Center etc.
As part of his activity he participated as a member of the Cyprus Struggle Committee of the University of Athens. He also contributed decisively to the establishment and organization of the Folklore Museum of Phoenician Thesprotia. Finally, he has been honored with a Medal and Diploma of Exceptional Acts for his participation and action in the National Resistance against Italian-Germans.
He was a regular professor until 1994, and a consistent, peer professor.
