Hellenistic are the cities founded in general admission during the period from which Alexander the Great ascended to the throne of the Macedonian Kingdom until the last dynasty of the Ptolemaeans in Ancient Egypt with the last ruler the well-known Queen Cleopatra. This admission cannot fail to include, and cities founded after this period by Hellenistic Kings who reigned until the 1st century AD. The founding of a city at this time was usually aimed at either the need for Hellenization of a foreign region, or the need to seal the sovereignty of a king.
