1960
3 January – On a Lockheed L-749A Constellation of the US-American Eastern Air Lines (aircraft registration N110A), the right main landing gear collapsed after landing at Philadelphia Airport (Pennsylvania, USA). The right wing and its motors were so badly damaged that the machine had to be written off. The cause was a fatigue fracture of the chassis cylinder. All 45 passengers survived the accident.

January 5 – In the case of a Vickers Viscount 701 of British European Airways (BEA) (G-AMNY), the hydraulic system and thus the brakes and nose wheel control failed after touchdown at the destination airport Malta. On the sloping terrain, the machine rolled against the control tower. None of the 51 passengers were harmed, but the plane was scrap-ripe.

January 6 – A US National Airlines Douglas DC-6B (N8225H) exploded in the air over Bolivia (North Carolina, USA) after a suicide bombed. All 34 people on board died.

7 January – In a Vickers Viscount 802 of the British European Airways (BEA) (G-AOHU) collapsed after touchdown at London Heathrow Airport, because the captain had landed in poor visibility in dense fog on the same first. The fire destroyed the entire plane. Nevertheless, all 59 inmates survived.

(A) January 18 – All four engines of a US Capital Airlines Vickers Viscount 745D (N7462) failed due to icing on a scheduled flight from Washington to Norfolk because the pilots had not switched on the engines’ deicing system. They succeeded in restarting the outer right engine. They maximally increased its performance to keep the machine at height. The plane then went into a spin and hit almost without forward movement in a forest area near Charles City (Virginia, USA). All 50 passengers were killed (see also Capital Airlines Flight 20).

January 19 – A Sud Aviation Caravelle I of SAS Scandinavian Airlines (OY-KRB) crashed about 10 kilometers before the airport of Ankara (Turkey) against a 1070 m high mountain. It is assumed that the pilots fell below the required altitude for this approach segment. All 42 people on board died. It was the first fatal flight accident of the Scandinavian airline since its inception 12 years earlier.
