The Republic of Cyprus, for administrative reasons, is divided into six provinces. These provinces are divided into municipalities and communities. Municipal Councils and Community Councils are the country's first degree of local government authorities. In addition, there are few Com munity Complex Councils. Municipalities and Communities have similar responsibilities, however, communities have less autonomy.

Municipalities and Community Councils by province
The following table shows the numbers of municipalities and communities by province (in brackets the number of municipalities and communities that, after the Turkish invasion of 1974, are not controlled by the Republic of Cyprus. Their territory belongs by law to the Republic of Cyprus, while de facto belongs to the unrecognised state of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. These municipalities and communities maintain their legal status in the Republic of Cyprus).

List of Municipalities and Community Councils
The following table shows alphabetically the Municipalities and Communities of the Republic of Cyprus, their population, the area they occupy and their altitude from sea level. For the population, the population is presented according to the last 2011 census. For the municipalities and communities not controlled by the Republic of Cyprus, no population is indicated, as after 1974 no census was carried out on them by the Republic of Cyprus, since their territory is not controlled by it.
