MS Ashdod
Overview
MS Ashdod (Hebrew: מועדון ספורט אשדוד, Moadon Sport Ashdod) is an Israeli soccer club based in the city of Ashdod. The team was founded in 1999 as a result of a merger between two local clubs.
History
The MS Ashdod group was created from the union of two senior soccer teams in Ashdod: Hapoel Aschdod and Maccabi Ironi Aschdod. Hapoel Aschdod, which had a larger and more peaceful fan base, was established in the early 1980s as a result of the merger between Ashdod and Beitar Ashdod. Although Hapoel Aschdod was more successful initially, Maccabi Ironi Aschdod was the first to qualify for the top league.
Founding and Early Years
The two teams merged in 1999, with a request submitted to the Association Registry to add "Urban City" or a similar name to the team's title. However, this proposal was not adopted. The club colors were initially blue but changed to yellow (representing Maccabi) and red (representing Hapoel) in 2000.
Success and Achievements
MS Ashdod has experienced significant success since its founding. In the 2004/05 season, the team reached third place in the league and lost in the cup final only on penalty shootout. The following season, MS Ashdod played in the UEFA Cup, but was eliminated by a Slovenian representative.
