Early Life and Career
Kyriaki Papadopoulou, known artistically as Marinella, was born on May 19, 1938, in Thessaloniki, Greece. She is the youngest child of Greek refugees from Constantinople. Her family encouraged her love for music from an early age; everyone in the household sang, and her father attempted to teach the children how to dance waltz and tango.
Marinella began singing on the radio at the age of four as part of a children's program, earning her first pocket money by advertising stores in Thessaloniki. She participated in numerous performances with the Mary Laurent Theatre Company for Children but dropped out to finish school.
Professional Career
At seventeen, Marinella joined the Mary Laurent Theatre Company and soon became a singer within the troupe after one of her colleagues fell ill. Her professional singing career began in 1957, releasing many personal albums that were well-received by the public.
Marinella was Greece's first representative at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with the song "Krasi, Thalassa Ke T'agori Mou." She is often referred to as the "primadonna" of Greek music and has been a significant figure in introducing various musical genres to Greece.
