Masari (Cyprus)

Location and Administration

Masari (; ) is a small village in Cyprus, located east of Morphou/Güzleyurt. De iure, it is part of the Nicosia District of the Republic of Cyprus, but de facto, it falls under the control of Northern Cyprus.

History

Until 1974, the village was inhabited exclusively by Greek Cypriots. In the Ottoman census of 1831, Christians (Greek Cypriots) were the only inhabitants of the village. During the British period, the population of the village increased significantly, from 49 in 1891 to a total population with the reputation of 2006 being 179.

Population

In 2011, Masari had 189 inhabitants.

Physical Geography

The village is situated in the geographical region of Morphou/Güzleyurt, eight kilometers east of the town of Morphou/Güzleyurt and two kilometers west of Fyllia/Serhatköy.

Origins of Name

Goodwin suggests that the name could come from "mesarka", which means "low ground". In 1976, the Turkish Cypriots changed their name to Şahinler, meaning "falchi".
