Melomakarono

Melomakarona

Melomakarona is a traditional Greek sweet pastry made mainly from flour, semolina, oil, orange juice, and honey. It is a classic dessert in Greek cuisine, particularly during Christmas celebrations.

History

The origins of melomakarona date back to ancient Greece, where makaria were consumed during funerals. Over time, the recipe evolved, and the addition of dipping in honey led to the creation of melomakarona. The name is derived from the Greek words "meli" (honey) and "makaria".

Ingredients

The main ingredients used to make melomakarona are:

* Flour or semolina
* Sugar
* Orange peel and/or fresh juice
* Coniac (or a similar liquor)
* Cinnamon
* Olive oil
* Ground almonds, which are typically filled into the pastry before baking.

Preparation

To prepare melomakarona, the dough is first mixed with the ingredients, then shaped into egg-like forms. After baking, the pastries are immediately dipped in a cold syrup made from honey and dissolved sugar in water for a few seconds. Finally, they are decorated with larger pieces of almonds.

Variations

There are also variations of melomakarona, including dark chocolate-covered versions, which are a newer creation.
