Single Party (Cyprus)
History
The Single Party was a Cypriot political party founded on February 5, 1969, by Glafcos Clerides. It originated from the Patriotic Front and was established as a moderate right-wing party.
Election Results
In the 1970 parliamentary election, the Single Party emerged as the largest party in the House of Representatives with 15 seats, despite finishing second in the vote tally due to the majority electoral system used at the time. This result was significant, as it marked the first time a party had secured the most seats in the House without being the largest in terms of votes.
Party Dissolution
The Single Party did not participate in any further elections after 1970. Glafcos Clerides went on to establish the pro-Western Democratic Rally prior to the 1976 elections, while Spyros Kyprianou founded the more pro-Makarios, moderate nationalist Democratic Party.
Parliamentary Group Composition (1970)
After the 1970 parliamentary election, the Single Party elected 15 MPs. The composition of the Parliamentary Group was as follows:
* Number of seats: 15
