Neta, Cyprus

Location and Geography

Neta (Greek: Νέτα; Turkish: Taşlıca) is a small village located on the Karpas Peninsula in the north of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. It belongs to the district of Famagusta, but de facto falls under the control of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

History and Demographics

Prior to 1974, Neta was almost exclusively inhabited by Greek Cypriots. However, after the Turkish invasion in 1974, the village came under the control of Northern Cyprus. According to the Statistical Service of Northern Cyprus, as of 2011, the village has a population of 80 inhabitants.

Physical Geography

Neta is situated on the Karpas Peninsula, approximately seven kilometers southeast of Agios Andronikos Karpasias/Yeşilköy and three kilometers south of Agios Symeon/Avtepe. The village is located near the southern coast of the peninsula.

Origin of the Name

The origin of the name "Neta" in Greek could mean "made clearly declared". The Turkish name of the village, Taşlıca, meaning "Roccioso", was adopted by the Turkish Cypriots in 1975.

Population Trends

Historical records show that in 1891, when the British ruled the island, 19 Greek men were censused as part of the tax units. This indicates a significant decline in population over time.

Administrative Status

After the Turkish invasion of 1974, Neta is not controlled by the Republic of Cyprus. It falls under the administrative control of Northern Cyprus, specifically within the district of İskele.
