Operation Marathon is the code name of a plan of State Security for the theft of the original manuscript of the Bulgarian Slavic History by the Zographic Monastery in 1985. The operation has been prepared extremely long. The truth about its implementation became public much later, after the journalist Hristo Hristov discovered in the archives of the State Security plans and reports about it.
Conduct
The operation itself is conducted by the Department of Cultural and Historical Intelligence. The purpose of the operation is to replace the original manuscript with a forgery. It was prepared for 10 years from 1972 to 1982. The operation itself started in 1982. In December 1984, the intelligence officer Hristo Marinchev went to the Zographic Monastery in Athos, but only reached Thessaloniki, as the Greek authorities refused his access to the peninsula. The officer's legend belongs to the Vice-President of the Committee on Church Affairs of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, and in fact is Deputy Head of Section 14, responsible for cultural and historical intelligence in Greece and Cyprus. After the failed attempt in December 1985, the employees of First General Management, legended as the first secretaries at the Bulgarian Embassy in Athens, Ivan Genev and Ventsislav Again were appointed as participants in the operation. They are helped by the embassy officer Dinko Pehlivanov. Agajin takes the manuscript under his dress and takes it to the Consulate General of Bulgaria in Thessaloniki. From there it was forwarded to the embassy in Athens, from where it was sent with diplomatic mail to Bulgaria. The role of Pehlivanov is the so-called clean man who does not suspect the actions of others. He found out about the theft only after leaving the monastery.
Disclosure and return
