Paul Freier

Slawomir Paul Freier (*26). July 1979 in Bytom, Poland is a Polish-German football coach and former player. During his active career he played in the Bundesliga for VfL Bochum and Bayer 04 Leverkusen. He also played 19 games for the German national team. Since 2015 he has been working as a coach in the youth sector.

Childhood and youth
Paul Freier was born in Upper Silesian Bytom, where his father Eugen Freier, a former football player, worked as a youth coach at Polonia Bytom. He grew up in the 1980s in the tense political situation in Poland at that time with supply shortages. In 1990, the family emigrated to the Federal Republic of Germany and settled in Arnsberg in Sauerland with Paul’s aunt and uncle.

Career as an Active

Beginnings
Paul Freier started playing football at the then third division club ŁTS Łabędy, a district club from Gliwice near Bytom. After moving to Arnsberg, Freier joined SV Holzen and later went to BSV Menden. As a teenager, he received an offer from the junior department of Borussia Dortmund, but his father was of the opinion that a change would come too early. Furthermore, due to his father’s professional activity, he could not have been driven to Dortmund several times a week. In 1996 Freier moved to the junior department of VfL Bochum.

VfL Bochum
For the VfL he gave on the 5. November 1999 his professional debut in the 2-0 victory against the SV Waldhof Mannheim in the 2nd Bundesliga. At the end of the season Freier rose with the Bochumers in the Bundesliga. For the professional team he had come in this season to six bets without goal success.
On 12 August 2000 he graduated with his substitution in the 75th. Minute in the 1-0 victory on the first matchday of the Bundesliga season 2000/01 against the 1st FC Kaiserslautern his Bundesliga debut. On April 28, 2001, he scored 1:0 at 1:1 on 31. Matchday in the Revierderby against FC Schalke 04 his first goal in professional football. Freier came in this season to 22 bets and a goal success together with two goal templates. VfL retired from the Bundesliga as the last table.

In the second division season 2001/02 Freier completed 30 bets and scored seven goals; VfL Bochum returned to the Bundesliga at the end of the season. The 2002/03 Bundesliga season brought the breakthrough for the right-wing outside forward: He came to 30 appearances and seven goals in the German upper house and established himself in the German national team. In the 2003/04 season, Freier occupied a UEFA Cup place with VfL Bochum and left the turf rivals FC Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund behind.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen
In his first season at Bayer 04 Leverkusen Freier was under coach Klaus Augenthaler mostly in the starting eleven, acted there mostly in the right midfield and completed 33 of 3
