Petra tou Digeni

Yeniceköy, Cyprus

Yeniceköy is a village under de facto control of Northern Cyprus, located in the Nicosia District.

History

Historically, the village has been inhabited by Turkish Cypriots. Even before 1974, the town was almost exclusively inhabited by Turkish Cypriots. After the Turkish invasion of 1974, the village is not controlled by the Republic of Cyprus.

Geography and Climate

The village is located in the plain of Messaria, at the southern slopes of Pentadaktylos, eight kilometers east of Kythrea/Değirmenlik and three kilometers south of Kalyvakia/Kalavaç. The 2011 census recorded a total population of the village of 399 inhabitants.

Origins of Name

The village takes its name from Digenis Akritas, who according to legend defends the island from Arab raids, although he himself was half Arabic. The Turkish Cypriots have always called the village Yeniceköy. The Ottoman census of 1831 recorded the name of the village as Yenice, so it is unclear when the name Petra tou Digeni was adopted by the Greek Cypriots.

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, the population of the village is 399 inhabitants. In the Ottoman census of 1831, Muslims (i.e. the Turkish Cypriots) were recorded as living in the village.
