"Population Census (Cyprus)"

--- CONTENT ---
The population censuses of the Republic of Cyprus are conducted by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Cyprus. Before the independence of Cyprus was conducted by the colonial administration of the island. The first census was held in 1881 and the last in 2021. A total of 15 population censuses have been carried out.

Background
The British Empire acquired Cyprus from the High Gate in 1878. In the same year an unofficial count of the island's population had been carried out by its English commanders.

The first scientific and systematic census of the population of Cyprus took place on 4 April 1881. Five other censuses per decade followed (1891, 1901, 1911, 1921, 1931). The next planned census would take place in 1941 but due to the conduct of World War II, it took place in 1946. The last census under English supervision followed on December 11, 1960.

The bicommunal disorders of 1963–64 and 1967 followed, resulting in the next census, to be carried out in 1970, to be carried out in 1973. The Turkish Cypriots refused to participate in it and so the data submitted by the statistical service for them is only a scientific assessment.

The next census took place in 1976. The 1974 Turkish invasion and the occupation of much of the island by Turkish troops had preceded it. The census was necessary to take place while a short period had elapsed since its previous, due to the rapid changes brought about by the Turkish invasion.

The 1976 census and subsequent censuses concerned only the free areas of the state, those that democracy could control. There are no statistics of the Turkish Cypriot population in the occupied areas. Five more censuses were then carried out (1982, 1992, 2001, 2011, 2021).
