Alexandru- Radu Timofte was born on 7 April 1949 in Horia Municipality (Neamț County); he graduated from the Higher School of Officers "Nicolae Balcescu" - the border gun (1966-1969) and the Academy of High Military Studies in Bucharest, the Faculty of Command and Staff (1974-1976), as an active officer in the Ministry of National Defence until 1988, when he was retired as a result of his sister's illegal stay abroad.

During the December 1989 Revolution, Radu Timofte was part of the head of the FSN committee in the Roman municipality.

In the 1990s-2004, he was elected Senator of Neamt on the lists of FSN, FDSN and PDSR.
