Rami Makhlouf
Rami Makhlouf (; born 10 July 1969) is a Syrian businessman and maternal cousin of President Bashar al-Assad. He is considered one of the most powerful men in Syria and part of Assad's small circle, with significant influence over the country's economy.
Business Activity
Makhlouf owns Syriatel, Syria's largest mobile phone network, as well as numerous retail, banking, and real estate companies. According to analysts, before the Syrian civil war in 2011, no foreign company could do business in Syria without his consent. In 2019, he controlled about 50% to 60% of Syria’s economy.
Personal Life
Makhlouf was born on 10 July 1969 in Damascus. He is married to Razan Othman and has two sons, Mohammad and Ali. Through his aunt, Anisa Makhlouf (wife of former Syrian President Hafez al-Assad), he is related to the Assad family.
Citizenship
Makhlouf applied for Austrian citizenship from 2009 to 2011 without obtaining it. In 2010, he acquired Cypriot nationality, which was revoked in 2013 by a decision of the Cypriot Cabinet.
Controversies and Accusations
Makhlouf has been accused in many cases of corruption, hijacking, fraud, and trafficking. His personal fortune is estimated to be around $6 billion (as of 2008) or $3 billion (as of 2006), with the Machluf family considered the richest family in Syria.
