Trachonas

Trachonas (;) is a northern suburb of Nicosia, Cyprus. It is located de iure in the district of Nicosia of Cyprus and de facto in the district of Lefkoşa of Northern Cyprus.

History

Before 1974, Trachonas was located on the northern border of the capital. After the Turkish invasion of 1974, the village is not controlled by the Republic of Cyprus, but its territory belongs to it by law. The village was inhabited mainly by Greek Cypriots before 1974.

According to the 2011 census, Trachonas had a population of 3535 inhabitants.

Physical Geography

----------------------

Trachonas is located six kilometers southwest of Assia/Paşaköy, between the old and the new road Nicosia-Famagosta.

Origins of Name

-------------------

The name "Trachonas" means "sour and rocky place" in Cypriot Greek. During the Ottoman period, Trakhonas was called Kızılbaş, which literally means "red head". Some Turkish Cypriot historians believe that the current position of Trachonas was used once as a settlement for some Alevite tribes from Anatolia.
