Religion
================Definition and Concept
Religion is a complex and multifaceted concept that encompasses various aspects of human culture, spirituality, and morality. It can be defined as a cultural system of behaviors, practices, cosmvisions, ethics, morals, texts, sacred places, prophecies, or organizations that relate humanity to supernatural, transcendental, mystical, or spiritual elements.
Characteristics
While there is no consensus on what constitutes a religion, Bernard Lonergan approaches it as a set of experiences, meanings, convictions, beliefs, and expressions of a group, through which participants respond to the dialectics of self-transcendence and relationship to divinity. Many religions have organized behaviors, clergy, definitions of adhesion or belonging, holy places, and scriptures.
Components
The practice of a religion may include various elements such as:
* Rituals
* Sermons
* Commemoration or veneration (to a deity, gods, or goddesses)
* Sacrifices
* Pilgrimages
* Processions
* Festivals
* Trance
* Initiations
* Funeral rites
* Matrimonial rites
* Meditation
* Prayer
* Music
* Art
* Dance
* Community services
Relationship to God and Supernatural Elements
Contrary to popular belief, the concept of religion does not necessarily imply a belief in a personal god. Some religions, such as Buddhism, may lack a belief in an individual deity, and are often referred to as "atheistic" or "non-theistic." However, this does not contradict the concept of religion itself.
Religious Consciousness
Religious consciousness is a collection of images, imaginations, feelings, and experiences that have their own subject of sacred, above, and true existence (or wonder). This can include a sense of awe, reverence, or connection to something greater than oneself.
Science of Religion
Religion is also considered the science of religion, encompassing the study of its various aspects, including its history, sociology, psychology, and philosophy.
