Ricardo Carvalho
Ricardo Alberto Silveira de Carvalho (born May 1978 in Amarante) is a former Portuguese football player and active coach.
Career
### Early Career
Carvalho began his career at Amarante Futebol Clube, where he played from 1990 to 1996. He then moved to the junior team of FC Porto. Carvalho played his first professional season in the 1997/98 season, when he was loaned to Leça FC.
### Professional Career
After further positions with Vitória Setúbal and FC Alverca, he finally returned to his main club, FC Porto, in the 2001/02 season. During this time, he established himself as a regular defender alongside Jorge Andrade, after Jorge Costa's loan to Charlton Athletic. He won all national titles as well as the UEFA Cup and the Champions League with his team.
In 2003, Carvalho was voted Portuguese Footballer of the Year, and in 2004, he was awarded UEFA Defender of the Year. Due to his performances, he moved to Chelsea FC for a transfer fee of 30 million euros in 2004, succeeding his coach José Mourinho.
### Later Career
Between July 2019 and February 2021, Carvalho served as an assistant coach at Olympique de Marseille under André Villas-Boas. He is also an officer of the Order of Infant Dom Henri.
