Riginos Theocharis was a Greek Cypriot politician. He was Minister of Finance of Cyprus.
Biographical data
Riginos Theocharis was born in 1929 in Larnaca. He studied economics and commercial sciences at the High School of Economics and Commercial Sciences. He continued with studies on the same subject at Aberdeen University. He then attended pedagogicals at Garnett College. Afterwards, he was awarded a doctor of economics and political science from the University of London.
In 1949-1956 he worked as a teacher of middle education in Cyprus. He then worked as an inspector at the Ministry of Education. In 1958-1959 he worked at the Directorate of Economic Studies of the Bank of Greece in Athens.
In 1962-1976 he worked as Governor of Bank of Cyprus.
From September 1975 to 1996 he was a regular professor at the Institute of History of Economic and Social Theories of the Economic Life of the Higher School of Economics and Commercial Sciences. He taught the objects of the History of Economic Life and the History of Economic Theories.
He died on 24 October 2018.
Path Policy
In April 1959 he was a member of the transitional committee, which aimed at drawing up plans to adapt and reorganise the government machine to transfer power from the colonial government to the independent Republic of Cyprus, having a temporary government position. Riginos Theocharis took over the Ministry of Finance for the period 2 April 1959 – 15 August 1960. On 16 August 1960 he was appointed Minister of Finance in the Government of Archbishop Makarios III 1960, a position in which he remained until 1 July 1962. He was Cyprus' first finance minister. He resigned to take command of Bank of Cyprus.
