RIK 1

RIK 1 is a public television station in Cyprus, owned and operated by the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (RIK). It was launched on October 1, 1957, under the British mandate, making it the first television station on the island.

**Early Years**

The channel began broadcasting as a television station of the Cyprus Radio Service, founded by the English colonial authorities. On January 1, 1959, it was renamed RIK, and with the advent of RIK 2 in 1992, it took its current name, RIK 1.

**Programming**

The channel's programming is generalist and broadcast exclusively in Greek. It aims to offer a variety of programs highlighting national culture, entertainment, and information. Much of its programming is simultaneously broadcast on the international television channel RIK Sat.

RIK 1 began broadcasting in black and white but started its first color television tests in 1982. In 1991, it transitioned from SECAM to PAL. The government ordered the creation of new studios in Nicosia and the establishment of television relays throughout the island after Cyprus gained independence in 1960.
