Lidl

Overview

Lidl is a European chain of large retail stores selling food and some basic goods. It operates over 12,200 branches across Europe and the USA, making it the largest discounter group in the world.

History

The company has its roots in Heilbronn, Germany, where A. Lidl & Cie., a spice and southern fruit trade, was founded in 1858. The company initially operated from various locations in Heilbronn before moving to Neckarsulm in 1930. That year, Josef Schwarz (1903–1977) joined the company as a personally liable partner.

Expansion

The first Lidl discount shop opened in 1973, and by 1977, the chain consisted of 33 stores. The company expanded rapidly across Europe, with branches now operating in over 32 countries. As of 2022, Lidl was present in 31 countries.

Structure

Lidl is part of the Schwarz Group, which also includes Kaufland as a full food range. The LD Foundation, based in Bad Wimpfen, operates the company's branches in Germany, while Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG, based in Neckarsulm, manages the other European and US operations.
