**Early Life and Education**
Sir Robert Biddulph GCB GCMG (26 August 1835 – 18 November 1918) was a British general who served in various capacities, including High Commissioner of Cyprus and Governor of Gibraltar.
Biddulph was born into a family with a strong military tradition. His father, also named Robert Biddulph, was a member of the House of Commons for the Hereford constituency and Deputy Lieutenant of Herefordshire. His older brother, Michael Biddulph, 1st Baron Biddulph, represented the constituency of Hereford as a Liberal Party representative and later South Herefordshire in the House of Commons for 25 years.
**Military Career**
Biddulph was educated at Twyford School and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1853 and served in the Crimean War, where he was present at the Siege of Sevastopol in 1854. He then participated in the Indian Mutiny, serving as a brigade commander during the siege of Lucknow in 1857.
**Appointments**
Biddulph held various appointments throughout his career:
* **High Commissioner of Cyprus**: Biddulph succeeded Garnet Wolseley on 23 June 1879 and held this position until he was replaced by Henry Ernest Gascoyne Bulwer on 9 March 1886.
* **Quartermaster General of the Armed Forces**: Biddulph served in this role from 1887 to 1893.
* **Governor of Gibraltar**: He served as Governor of Gibraltar from an unspecified date until 1900.
**Later Life and Death**
Biddulph died on 18 November 1918, at the age of 83.
