The Roman Navy
History
The Roman fleet, also known as the Classis Romana, was the warships held by the Romans during their history. It began to take shape in the First Punic War (264-241 BC) during the period of the Republic and continued until the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD.
### Early Republic
Prior to the First Punic War, the Roman Navy was composed only of several ships patrolling the coasts of Italy and its rivals. However, with the beginning of the confrontation between Rome and Carthage, the need arose to build a war fleet to counter the threat posed by the powerful Carthaginian fleet.
Since the Romans lacked naval construction experience, they relied on their allies in Italy to build the Navy. In 260 BC, during the summer, the first Roman warships were constructed.
### Imperial Period
The Roman Navy began to operate permanently in the Mediterranean Sea and on the main rivers of the Roman Empire with the advent of the principality of Augustus (27 BC - 284 AD). The military navy played a crucial role in the Roman conquests, particularly during the Punic Wars and other Eastern campaigns.
### Role and Structure
The Roman Navy was one of the three branches of the Roman military, alongside the legions and auxiliary troops. It consisted of various naval and river fleets as well as flotillas of individual legion ships. The navy served to combat endemic piracy in the Mediterranean Sea, which had been conquered by the Romans.
### Decline
The decline of the Western Roman Empire marked the end of the Roman Navy's existence. Its place was taken by the Byzantine Navy, which continued to operate until the fall of Constantinople in 1453 AD.
Dates and Periods
* First Punic War (264-241 BC)
* Principality of Augustus (27 BC - 284 AD)
* Fall of the Western Roman Empire (476 AD)
Note: The dates mentioned in Source 4 (650 AD) are likely an error, as it is generally accepted that the Byzantine Navy emerged after the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
