Rosen Plevneliev

Early Life and Education

Rosen Asenov Plevneliev was born on May 14, 1964, in Gotse-Delchev, Blagoevgrad Province, to a family of teachers Slavka (born December 20, 1936) and Asena (died 1985) Plevneliev. He has an older brother, Rumen (born 1959). Plevneliev's ancestors were Bulgarian refugees from Pleven, Dramsko, who moved to Bulgaria in 1913.

Plevneliev studied at the S. P. Korolev gymnasium in Blagoevgrad and graduated from V. I. Lenin Higher Machine-Building and Electrotechnical Institute (now Sofia Technical University) with a degree in "Computer Engineering" in 1989.

Career

After graduating, Plevneliev worked at the Institute of Microelectronics but was laid off due to economic changes. In 1990, he founded the construction company Iris International. He also worked in the representative office of the German company Lindner.

Plevneliev entered politics and became Minister of Regional Development on July 27, 2009. He held this position until 2011.

Presidential Career

In the 2011 presidential election, Plevneliev won as GERB's presidential candidate at the runoff, receiving 52.56% of the support according to the interim results of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC). On January 19, 2012, he and Margarita Popova took an oath as President and Vice President of the Republic of Bulgaria before the National Assembly. Plevneliev took office on January 22, 2012, when President Georgi Parvanov's term of office expired.

Plevneliev served as the fourth President of Bulgaria from January 22, 2012, to January 22, 2017.
