Origin and diffusion
It is composed of the German elements hros, "cavallo" (which also composes the name Horst) and mund, "protection", "defense", but some sources identify the second element with mund, "mouth". The name was later influenced by the Latin expression munda, "pure rose" (like process also under the name Rosalinda).
In England it was introduced by the Normans.
Onomaly
Several sources report that the name is celebrated in memory of Saint Rosamunda, mother of Saint Adiutor of Vernon; the date, depending on the sources, is fixed on 14 June, 14 July, 15 July or 30 April (the same as the son).
The woman was indeed considered "holy" by the neighbors, but is not reported on any martyrology: the homomist then falls on 1 November, for the feast of All Saints.
