Description
Kirinia roxelana, also known as the Lattice Brown or Roxelane, is a butterfly of the family Nymphalidae. It is found in southeastern Europe and the Near East.
### Physical Characteristics
The length of the forewings is approximately 39-31 mm. The wingspan is about 60 mm. The upper side of the wings is yellowish brown with large orange-red spots on the front wings. The lower side of the front wings is mostly painted orange, while the female has light spots near the top of the wing on both sides.
The male's upper side is black-brown, while the female's upper side is grey-brown with a reddish disc on the forewing. The underside of the rear wings is dull, grey-beige with a line of black ocelli punctuated with white, successively ringed with ochre and then brown.
### Distribution and Habitat
The butterfly is found in southeastern Europe and the Near East. It is on wing between May and July. The larvae feed on various grasses.
History and Classification
Kirinia roxelana was named by Pieter Cramer in 1777 (LT: Istambul). Synonyms include Papilio roxelana Cramer, [1777] and Pararge roxelana .
Etymology
The name "Roxelane" is derived from the Turkish name for the butterfly.
