Overview
The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the air and space force of the United Kingdom. It is the world's oldest independent air force, with a rich history dating back to 1918.
History
The RAF was founded on April 1, 1918, by merging the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) and the Royal Flying Corps (RFC). The first operational task was carried out by the 22nd Squadron on the same day. At the end of World War I, the RAF had become the world's largest air force, with 22,647 aircraft and 103 airships.
During World War II, the RAF played a major role in defending Britain against the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain. The RAF continued to play an important part in British military history, participating in various conflicts around the world.
Structure
As of 2021, the Royal Air Force has approximately 37,810 personnel and operates 738 aircraft and helicopters. The RAF is one of the largest and most advanced air forces in the world.
