Royal Excelsior Mouscron
History
The Royal Excelsior Mouscron was a Belgian football club based in the municipality of Mouscron, province of Hainaut. The club has its roots in the Association Athlétique Mouscronnoise, founded in 1922.
### Early Years and Mergers
In 1964, the Association Athlétique Mouscronnoise merged with the Royal Stade Mouscronnois to form Excelsior Mouscron, which would later change its name to Royal Excelsior Mouscron on August 31, 1964. In 1990, the club underwent another merger with the Association Athlétique Rapid Club Mouscronnois, retaining the name.
### Rise and Fall
The team experienced a significant rise in the 1995-96 season, qualifying for and winning the play-off to reach the First Belgian Division. The following year, they finished third in the league in their first season in the top category of Belgian football.
However, the club faced major financial problems and officially disappeared from Division 1 in December 2009 due to debts. On the same day, the players were released from their contracts, and the URBSFA (Union Royale Belge des Sociétés de Football Association) wrote off the team's number 224.
### Legacy
After several weeks of negotiations, two agreements were signed between the Moscronese leaders and the RRC Péruwelz leaders. The club moved to the Mouscron Canonnier Stadium and ended the 2010-11 season as Royal Mouscron-Peruwelz. Although there was no fusion with the former Excelsior team, the new club has been in Division 1 since the 2014-15 season.
