Russian Women’s Football Team

The Russian women’s football team represents Russia in international women’s football. The national team is subordinate to the Russian Football Federation RFS.
The Russian team is the successor to the women's football national team of the USSR; The first match counted by FIFA for Russia was still contested by the Soviet team.
In 1997, Russia was able to qualify for the first time for a European Football Championship, in the qualifying round, the Russians were group winners ahead of France. In the final round, however, Russia was eliminated after defeats against France, Sweden and Spain in the preliminary round.
Two years later, the Russians won the Women’s Football World Cup 1999/Qualification#Class A against Finland and qualified for a World Cup for the first time. In the USA, they started with a close 1-2 defeat to the defending champions from Norway, in the two remaining group games, however, the team was able to convince and moved into the quarterfinals. Against China, however, Russia lost with 0:2 and missed by the last minute hit of Sweden in the 1-3 defeat against Norway only narrowly the qualification for Olympic 2000.
At the European Championship 2001, the Russian ladies were eliminated with only one point in the preliminary round. At the 2003 World Cup they reached the quarterfinals again, but there they lost 1:7 against the later world champion Germany.
In the qualification for the 2005 European Championship, Russia failed in the play-off games against Finland, for the 2007 World Cup you could not qualify after two defeats against Germany.
For the European Championships 2009, 2013 and 2017, Russia qualified, but were eliminated in the preliminary round. They were also qualified for the European Championship 2022 and were suspended due to the Russian attack on Ukraine.

Other tournaments
The national team has participated in the Algarve Cup five times so far and reached the best place so far with fifth place in 1996. In 2014, Russia played in the group of weaker teams and reached with one victory and two defeats as group second the game for 9th place, which was won 1-0 against Norway. 2016 was followed by place 6, place 8 in 2017 and last place in 2018 after four defeats.
