Russo-Ukrainian War
Russia's Invasion of Ukraine
Background
Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a warring conflict between Russia and Ukraine that began on 24 February 2022. It is the culmination of the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict since 2014.
Causes
The conflict has its roots in the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, which was followed by several months of attacks in Donbas. The situation escalated further with the recognition of the People's Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk (DPR and LPR) by Russia on 21 February 2022.
Invasion
The invasion began on 24 February 2022, following a mandate from Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin to march Russian troops into Ukrainian territory. The military campaign was preceded by the deployment of Russian troops along the border with Ukraine in November 2021.
International Response
The United Nations General Assembly condemned Russia's actions and called them aggressive against Ukraine on March 2, 2022. The International Court of Justice at the Hague issued an order on March 16, 2022, calling on Russia to end its military operation in Ukraine.
Humanitarian Crisis
The invasion has caused a severe humanitarian crisis, including a global food shortage and the worst refugee crisis in Europe since World War II.
