Santa Claus

Santaklaus is also known as Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas (the originator of Christmas), Kris Kringle, or simply "Santa". From a mythological and historical perspective, he is a figure in folklore. In many Western cultures, it is believed that Santa Claus brings gifts to the homes of good children on the eve of Christmas, i.e., on the evening or late at night of December 24.

The modern image of Santa originated from the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas, who was possibly associated with gift-giving Saint Nicholas. Saint Nicholas is a historical figure mentioned in hagiographical stories.

A similar story is found in Byzantine and Greek folklore about Basil of Caesarea (Basil of Caesarea).

In Greece, January 1 is celebrated as the feast day of Basil, on which gifts are exchanged.

Santa Claus is generally depicted as a stout, jovial man with a white beard, wearing a red coat with a white collar and cuffs, along with black leather belt and boots (some images show him with a beard but no mustache).

This image became popular in the United States and Canada in the 19th century. Cartoonist Thomas Nast played an important role in making this image popular.

Songs, radio, television, children's books, and films have helped to keep this image alive.

In the United Nations and Europe, he is often depicted as American Santa Claus but is usually referred to as Father Christmas.

According to a famous folklore story, Santa lives in a snowy country far north.

The American version of Santa says he lives at the North Pole, while it is often said that Father Christmas lives in Finland's Lapland province in the Korvatunturi mountains.

Santa lives with his wife, Mrs. Claus, and an unspecified but large number of imaginary elves and at least eight or nine flying reindeer.

Another folklore story, popularized by the song "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town", says that he makes a list of all children in the world, categorizing them according to their behavior ("naughty" and "good"), and on Christmas Eve, gives gifts to all good boys and girls and sometimes coal to naughty ones.

For this task, he is assisted by an elf who works in his workshop making toys and a reindeer that pulls his sleigh.

Origin

Early Christian Origin
Mira's Saint Nicholas was primarily inspired by the Christian figure of Sinterklaas.

He was a Greek Christian bishop from the 4th century in the province of Lycia, which is now part of Turkey.

Nicholas was known for being generous and giving gifts to poor people, especially when he gave dowries to three sisters so they would not become prostitutes.

He was very devout from a young age and dedicated his entire life to Christianity.
