Silene
================Silene is a plant genus belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family. It includes approximately 600-700 species, with many found in temperate areas of the northern hemisphere.
Description
### Appearance and Leaves
Silene species grow as one- to two-year-old or perennial herbaceous plants, rarely half-bushes. The stems are independently upright, ascending or crawling. The leaves are oppositely arranged, with lower ones usually stalked and upper ones seated. The simple leaf shapes are peel-shaped, linear, lancet-like to egg-shaped lancet-like or elliptical.
### Flowers and Inflorescences
The flowers stand individually or are grouped in inflorescences which have the form of monochasia, dichasia or thyrsene. The radially symmetrical flowers are five-fold with a double flower shell. The five calyx leaves are tubular, funnel-shaped, egg-shaped or bell-shaped.
