Syrianochori

Syrianochori (; ) is a village in Cyprus. De iure it is located in the district of Nicosia of the Republic of Cyprus, de facto, in that of Güzelyurt of the republic of Northern Cyprus.

History

Until 1974, the village was inhabited exclusively by Greek Cypriots. During the British period, the population of the village increased significantly, from 290 inhabitants in 1901 to a peak of over 850 people before the Turkish invasion of 1974.

Physical Geography

The village is located in the northern part of the bay of Morfou, seven kilometers north-west of the town of Morfou/Güzelyurt. At Syrianochori flows the Serrachis, the third river of Cyprus by length.

Origins of Name

In Greek, Syrianochori means "village of the Syrians". In 1975, the Turkish Cypriots changed their name to Yayla, which is the village in the area of Polis from which most of them came (Galia in Greek, Yayla in Turkish). In Turkish, Yayla means "top".

Population

According to the 2011 census, Syrianochori had a population of 850 people. The total population of the village has remained relatively stable over the years, with some fluctuations due to migration and other factors.

Administrative Status

De facto, Syrianochori is under the control of Northern Cyprus, while de iure it belongs to the district of Nicosia in the Republic of Cyprus.
