Taganrog (Russian: Таганрог; Ukrainian: Таганрог) is a city in the Rostov region of Russia. It is situated on the shore of the Taganrog Gulf of the Sea of Azov, approximately 66 km from the regional center of Rostov-on-Don.

History

Taganrog was founded by Peter I in 1698 as the first Russian naval base and the first city in Russia built according to a regular plan. The city played an important role in the development of the Russian Navy, serving as a strategic port on the open sea coast.

In 1712, the Turks temporarily seized Taganrog, but it was returned to Russia after the Kuchuk-Kajnarja Treaty in 1774, following Russia's victory over the Ottoman Empire. The city remained under Russian control and continued to grow as an important naval base and commercial center.

As of 2013, the population of Taganrog is approximately 254,800 inhabitants. According to the 2018 census, the population was 249,848. Despite a decline in population over the past decade, Taganrog remains one of the largest cities in the Rostov region.

Significance

Taganrog has played a significant role in Russian history and culture. In 1918, the People's Secretariat and the CEC of the Councils of the UNSR (Ukrainian People's Republic of Soviets) were evacuated to Taganrog. The city was also the location of the Headquarters of Denikin, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces in the South of Russia, in 1919.

On November 3, 2011, the city was awarded the honorary title "City of Military Glory" for its contributions to Russian military history.

Taganrog is situated on the north-eastern coast of the Sea of Azov, forming part of the Ukrainian ethnic side of the Vale. The city district of Taganrog is located in the Rostov region and serves as a major port and commercial center.
