Taksim

Taksim (Music)

Taksim (Arabic: طقسم; Greek: ταξίμ) is a melodic musical improvisation that typically precedes the interpretation of traditional Arab, Greek, Turkish, or Middle Eastern compositions. It is usually performed at a slow tempo and serves as an introduction to the main piece.

Definition

Taksim is an instrumental expression of the maqāmāt musical modes. It follows a specific melodic progression, starting from the tonic of a maqam (musical mode). The initial compass of improvisation adheres to the lower tones of the maqam, presenting it to the listener. After this introduction, the interpreter is free to move anywhere within the maqam and may even modulate to other maqamat, as long as they return to the original.

Types

There are several types of taksim, including:

* **Input Taksim**: The initial improvisation that introduces the maqam.
* **Intermediate Taksim**: A transitional section that connects different sections of a composition.
* **Last Taksim**: The final improvisation before the conclusion of a piece.
* **Pass Taksim**: A type of taksim that passes through multiple maqamat.

Instruments

Taksim can be performed on various melodic instruments, including:

* Wind instruments: Ney, Mizmar, Kawala
* Stringed instruments: Lute, Qanun
* Other instruments: Piano (influenced by Western music)

Purpose and Significance

The purpose of taksim is to showcase the musician's skills and create familiarity with the maqam in the listener. It serves as an introduction to the main piece and allows the interpreter to express their creativity within the framework of a specific musical mode.
