================Tala (Greek: Τάλα) is a large suburban village located 6 km north of Paphos, Cyprus. It is situated at an elevation of 290 meters above sea level and has a population of approximately 3,335 people.
Geography and Climate
The village receives an average annual rainfall of about 520 mm. Tala is nestled in the hills of western Cyprus, offering a mild climate with warm summers and mild winters.
History
The date of foundation of the village is unknown, but it was first mentioned in a Venetian catalog of 1523. During the domain of the Lusignano family, Tala was a fief of the Latin families of the Flutrons and the D'Avila, and took its name from a corruption of the name of the D'Avila family.
Notable Events
During the liberation struggle of 1955-1959 against the British, the fighter Miltiades Stylianou, leader of the local group of EOKA, fell in Tala. The village also played a significant role in the country's fight for independence.
Points of Interest
The monastery of Agios Neophytos, founded by Saint Neofitos of Cyprus, is located within the community. The monastery is a notable landmark and an important cultural site in the region.
Demographics
According to the 2011 census, Tala had a population of 2,695 inhabitants. However, the total population of the village has increased over the years due to the influx of non-Cypriots (mostly British) who have moved here permanently or have a summer home in Tala.
Notable Residents
Zena Gunther de Tyras (1927-2012), a Cypriot socialist and philanthropist, was born in Tála. She was a prominent figure in the country's liberation struggle and is remembered for her contributions to the community.
