Tavros (Famagusta District)
Tavros (; Greek: Ταύρος, Turkish: Pamuklu) is a village located on the Karpas Peninsula in the north of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. It belongs to the district of Famagusta of Cyprus, while de facto is located in the district of İskele of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
History
Before 1974, the village was inhabited by Cypriot Greeks. The 1960 census counted 311 Cypriot Greeks and a Cypriot Turk, in 1973 there were 323 Cypriot Greeks. Most of them fled to the south of the island after the Turkish invasion in 1974. Forty-seven people attempted to remain in the village.
Physical Geography
Tavros is located on the Karpas Peninsula, approximately 1 km north of Bafra.
Origins of Name
The name "Tavros" means "toro" or "bull" in Greek. In 1975, the Turkish Cypriots renamed the village Pamuklu, meaning "place with cotton" or "made of cotton".
Population
According to the Statistical Service of Northern Cyprus, as of 2011, the village has a population of 280 inhabitants.
Demographics
Prior to the 1974 invasion, the village was predominantly inhabited by Cypriot Greeks. The Turkish Cypriots renamed the village in 1975 and it is now considered part of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
